Adapting to progressive lenses
At the LookMobile, we understand that using progressive lenses for the first time can seem intimidating. But don’t worry! Our mission is to ensure your experience is easy so that you can enjoy clear vision at all distances.
What are Progressive Lenses?
Progressive lenses are designed to provide a seamless transition between the different vision zones- from your distance prescription at the top, through the intermediate or “arm’s length” zone, and down to the near vision prescription at the bottom. This means there’s a specific area on the lens designed for each visual task, and all you need to do is learn how to find it.
While it may take a few days for most people to completely adjust to their new lenses, we have compiled some essential tips to help ease this adaptation process.
Tips for Easy Adaptation
Wear your new glasses consistently. As soon as you receive your progressive lenses, put them on and keep them on. The frames will have been pre-adjusted during your visit from the LookMobile, so they should feel comfortable and be correctly positioned. Avoid switching between your new and old glasses; this will only prolong the adaptation period.
Find your distance vision. To start, sit or stand comfortably with your head level and look into the distance. You should experience clear vision through the upper part of your lenses-this is your distance prescription. At first you may notice a slight distortion on the outer edges of your peripheral vision. Rest assured, this will diminish as you continue to adapt.
Re-adjust to near vision. Now grab your phone or a book and hold it normally. Keeping your head level, move your eyes downward in the lens until the print becomes clear-this is your near prescription. Some of you may need to break the habit of tipping your head downward to read- but ultimately you’ll find this position to be more comfortable as well as better for your posture.
Locate the intermediate zone. Next, sit at your computer or hold your phone at arm’s length. Move your eyes toward the center of the lenses until your vision is clear-this is your intermediate prescription. If you work with dual monitors or a large display, you’ll probably have to move your head from side to side to see the whole thing clearly. This is because the intermediate zone is the smallest area in a progressive lens. If your daily routine revolves around computer use or other intermediate-heavy work, we recommend a task-specific lens for best comfort.
Exercise Caution. Until you are fully comfortable in your progressive lenses, please be careful when driving or navigating stairs. Remember, patience is key-you will acclimate very soon!
Conclusion
At the LookMobile, we’re committed to enhancing your everyday vision experience. With a bit of practice and patience, you’ll soon enjoy the clarity and convenience that progressive lenses provide. Enjoy your journey to clearer sight!
Until next time, look out for the LookMobile!
